Begich, Boggs Visitor Center

The Begich, Boggs Visitor Center is the main educational hub at Portage Glacier. It sits directly on the terminal moraine left by the retreating ice in 1914.

Located 50 miles south of Anchorage, this facility operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It is named after US Representatives Nick Begich and Hale Boggs, who disappeared in a 1972 plane crash.

Because the glacier has retreated over 3 miles since 1914, you can no longer see it from the center. You will still see the 600-foot deep Portage Lake and occasional floating icebergs from the viewing decks.
