Portage Lake

Portage Lake fills the valley left by the retreating glacier.

Carved by the retreating ice over the past century, this 600-foot deep lake separates the visitor center from the glacier face. It serves as the primary route to see the ice up close.

During the summer, commercial boats navigate the water. In the winter, the completely frozen surface becomes a route for skiers, bikers, and skaters to cross.

Winter Ice Trekking

When the lake freezes completely, locals use the surface to reach the glacier. People cross-country ski, ice skate, or ride fat-tire bikes across the ice. Check local conditions carefully before going out. Ice thickness varies, and you travel strictly at your own risk.
