Choosing the right gear depends on your plans for the day. If you take the one-hour boat tour or hike the Portage Pass Trail, the weather can change quickly. Come prepared for wind, rain, and cold temperatures near the glacier.

What to wear on the Portage Glacier boat tour?

Wear warm layers like fleece or down, and a waterproof windbreaker.

The open deck of the MV Ptarmigan boat is very cold. Wind blows directly off the glacier during the one-hour cruise. Layering lets you adjust to changing temperatures between the enclosed cabin and the outside viewing decks.

Do I need hiking boots for Portage Glacier?

Yes, wear sturdy hiking boots if you plan to walk the trails.

The Portage Pass Trail involves an 800-foot elevation gain over 2 miles. Good traction and support are necessary for this climb. If you only visit the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center or the accessible Trail of Blue Ice, comfortable walking shoes are sufficient.

Should I bring sunglasses to the glacier?

Yes, pack sunglasses and sunscreen for your visit.

The glare reflecting off Portage Lake and the glacial ice can be intense. Binoculars are also highly recommended. They help you spot wildlife and get a closer look at the blue ice from the boat or trail viewpoints.

Do I need bear spray at Portage Glacier?

Pack bear spray if you hike the surrounding trails.

Bears live in the Chugach National Forest. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife. Insect repellent is also necessary during the summer to protect against mosquitoes.

Questions travellers ask

Can I buy gear at the visitor center?

The Alaska Geographic Bookstore inside the Begich, Boggs Visitor Center sells books, maps, and souvenirs. It does not stock heavy clothing or outdoor gear.

What should I wear for winter visits?

Winter visitors often ice skate or fat-tire bike across frozen Portage Lake. You need heavy winter insulation and safety gear, as lake ice travel is strictly at your own risk.

Is the boat tour enclosed?

The MV Ptarmigan has both enclosed, heated areas and open outdoor viewing decks. You will want warm clothes to stand outside near the glacier face.
